A hard-fought draw

I was a little frightened to see Néstor “The Fatty” Ortigoza on the field. I hoped he’d tire out quickly in the altitude. But he didn’t. He played with supreme efficiency, pushing the ball into the safest spaces, away from the Ecuadorians. He gave the pass that set up the Paraguayans’ tying goal.

If Ortigoza was efficient, his Ecuadorian counterpart, Christian Noboa, was spectacular.

Noboa hit three hard shots off of the post – one of which Énner Valencia pounced on for the first goal. Then, in the dying minutes, he gave a chip-pass to Ángel Mena for the definitive 2–2.

Should this goal have counted? When it occurred, I thought Mena was offside; but later I saw how well he timed his movement. Here are some screenshots, in reversed order.

This article gives the clearest image.

I believe the goal was licit. In any case, we can applaud the linesman for giving the attacker the benefit of the doubt.

This was but one moment of Ecuadorian brilliance; there were others. Alas, one brilliant player, Jeff Montero, was stonewalled by the defender Bruno Valdez. Only after Valdez’s injury, when Iván Piris came in, did Montero have his way.

On the whole, though, the injuries were worse for Ecuador.

We sorely missed the “Hormiga.” Due to his absence, Antonio Valencia rarely ventured to attack (though when he did, he was a menace).

Miller Bolaños was missed; Felipe Caicedo was missed. Gabo Achilier was on the field, but he shouldn’t have been.

Costa Rica 1, Italy 0; France 5, Switzerland 2; Ecuador 2, Honduras 1

The Costa Ricans are for real.

The Swiss’s collapse was sorrier than Spain’s. Some of the French goals were as soft as cotton.

Victory for Ecuador. … We looked awful. We looked like we were in the 2002 World Cup: tentative, nervy. Without Castillo, we couldn’t dominate the midfield. It wasn’t pleasing to behold.

A few other notes:

(1) The Hondurans have such dirty players. They tackle viciously; they handle deliberately. Playing beautifully against them is impossible. A cynical, cynical team.

(2) Our second goal against Honduras was a carbon copy of our goal against the Swiss — and of several earlier goals (here and here). A foul against Jefferson Montero on the left side of the box; a bullet cross by Walter Ayoví; a close-range header. This trick may be unstoppable.

R.I.P. “Chucho,” pt. 2

In Chile’s Estadio Nacional, the Ecuadorians celebrate their qualification. Jeff Montero and Toño Valencia wear undershirts commemorating the “Chucho” Benítez. On Valencia’s undershirt, the “Chucho” has wings.

Yesterday, for the first time in two months, I went running. Five miles. Easy peasy.

Respite/remorse

Yeah, Ecuador defeated Paraguay, yeah, yeah, yeah. The hero was Jefferson Montero. We are good. We are very, very good.

Six more games. The arithmeticians say that in order to qualify for the World Cup, we need just 5 more points (5 draws, or else 2 draws + 1 victory, or else 2 victories (which’d give us 6 points)). I can’t get my own calculations to agree with the arithmeticians’, but OK.

I liked how savagely you blasted George Saunders, my friend said. (My friend had given me George Saunders’s book.)

I felt badly about that, I said.

(We were at Popeyes.)

Why? said my friend, with the kindest expression.

You know, I said. I’m biting the hand that feeds me.
